This contest between the Mets and the Dodgers was a classic Jacob deGrom start through and through. He was matched up against another Cy Young Award frontrunner, albeit one who has struggled of late. Unsurprisingly, the Mets’ offense righted Ryu’s ship because they seem physically incapable of giving Jacob deGrom any run support.
Both pitchers certainly made their case for the Cy Young Award tonight. Each of them went seven shutout innings. deGrom gave up just three hits and Ryu gave up only two. deGrom struck out eight batters and Ryu struck out six.
However, the Mets came out on top of the battle of the bullpens. Despite some questionable managerial decisions from Mickey Callaway in the eighth inning, the Mets loaded the bases against Joe Kelly and Julio Urias. Rajai Davis delivered the key hit—a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double that broke the scoreless tie and put the Mets ahead 3-0.
Seth Lugo struck out the side in the top of the eighth and earns the win for his effort. Justin Wilson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Full recap to follow.
