On a night when the Mets desperately needed a win against a vastly superior opponent, a win that seemed within their grasp, they ultimately fell flat in a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. Zack Wheeler was superb through seven innings and Brandon Nimmo generated just enough offense against Walker Buehler, but missed opportunities against the Dodger bullpen came back to bite the Mets when their own bullpen predictably struggled.
The seventh inning of this game may well haunt the Mets if they fail to make the playoffs. Dustin May, a rookie starter-turned-reliever with an ERA in the mid 4’s, put two men on base with one out and the Mets up by one. Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario struck out, however, and Justin Wilson and Seth Lugo combined to give up two runs in their two innings of work, leading to the loss.
With thirteen games left to play, the Mets now find themselves four games back of both the Cubs and Brewers in the Wild Card race. They’ll start a three game set with the Rockies on Monday.
Full recap to follow.
