Steven Matz looked to be cruising with a three-run lead, but a nightmare of an inning led to a complete meltdown and a 9-4 Coors Field loss.
Home runs by Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil gave the Mets an early lead, but Matz suddenly couldn’t throw a strike in the fourth which led to a six-run inning by the Rockies. The most egregious hit was a two-run single by pitcher Antonio Senzatela who had been mired in an 0-for-44 slump. Trevor Story followed with a three-run bomb and the Rockies never looked back.
A bad play by Pete Alonso in the seventh tacked on the eighth Colorado run and Edwin Diaz gave up another that put the game away. It was an ugly night all around and the Mets are facing a stark reality that time is running out.
Full recap to follow.
