Final Score: Mets 6, Rockies 1—The Stro Show

The Mets got back in the win column thanks to a great performance by Stroman and three homers in the sixth.

The New York Mets evened up their series with the Colorado Rockies behind a strong start from Marcus Stroman and a solid offensive showing in the second half of the game. Despite hitting into four double plays and going down relatively quietly over the first five innings, the Mets blasted off in the sixth and picked up a much-needed 6-1 to temporarily right their sinking ship.

Stroman was spectacular over seven shutout innings, striking out seven while walking one. He gave up just four hits and was in command from the start in a tough place to pitch. He rarely got into much trouble and got a couple of well-timed double plays to escape any serious threat. On the final pitch of the night, he struck out Raimel Tapia while Wilson Ramos threw out Charlie Blackmon trying to steal second base.

The offense was quiet through the first five innings against Rockies’ starter Tim Melville but finally erupted for four runs in the fifth. Amed Rosario hit the go-ahead two run home run after a Todd Frazier single. Later in the inning, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso hit solo home runs, with the latter going for an estimated 467 feet. The Mets added an insurance run in the eighth on an Alonso bloop single and another in the ninth on a Todd Frazier run-scoring hit.

With Stroman’s night over, Mickey Callaway used a pair of lefties to complete the eighth and the ninth. Justin Wilson worked around a two-out double to pitch a scoreless eighth, while Luis Avilan served up a titanic solo shot to Blackmon in the ninth but was otherwise able to close out the game and secure the win.

The Chicago Cubs lost to the Cincinnati Reds, while the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres. If you’re still keeping score at home, the Mets are four games’ back of the Cubs and the Brewers for a playoff spot.
