Final Score: Mets 7, Rockies 4—Rocky Road

Mets rally late to pull out a game they absolutely could not afford to lose.

In a situation where they need to win virtually every remaining game—and still hope for tons of help in others—the Mets trailed most of the day before rallying late to pull out the rubber game of their series Wednesday afternoon in Colorado against the Rockies.

The Mets got off to a quick early lead in Coors, as Jeff McNeil launched a solo home run to right to plate Noah Syndergaard to a 1-0 lead. Sam Hilliard one-upped McNeil, homering in both the second and the fourth innings to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead.

The Mets would continue to trail until the ninth. Colorado’s stellar defense stymied the Mets early, notably when Ryan McMahon made a great play on a Robinson Cano shot with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the third. Trevor Story also shined, twice robbing Amed Rosario of a base hit.

Each team had a huge opportunity in back-to-back frames, as the Rockies loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the fifth. Syndergaard got Nolan Arenado to pop out, but Charlie Blackmon was able to record a sacrifice fly to extend the Colorado lead to 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Mets tried to respond, as Pete Alonso launched a 448 ft. blast into a strong wind to restore the deficit to one. However, after a Cano double and a pair of walks, Rosario popped out and Rene Rivera grounded out to squander the opportunity.

The Rockies scratched the run back against Syndergaard in the bottom of the frame, putting the Mets behind by two again. The Mets responded late, plating one in the eighth on a Michael Conforto RBI groundout to make it 4-3. The team then rallied for four in the top of the ninth, with Brandon Nimmo singling in the tying run, Alonso drawing a bases loaded walk to give the Mets their first lead the second, and capped by a Seth Lugo RBI single.
