Steven Matz clearly did not have it yet again which ended in a crushing 8-4 loss at Citi Field. The Marlins got a couple of runs early but the big blow came off the bat of Jorge Alfaro who hit his first career grand slam, and second home run of the day, to put the Marlins up big.
The Mets attempted a comeback when Amed Rosario countered with a grand slam but the combination of Walker Lockett and Brad Brach allowed two runners to score on a routine ground ball. Brach was late covering first and the pesky Jon Berti hustled home to score the second run. Berti was a pest all night and went four-for-five with three runs as he continues to terrorize the Mets.
As for the Mets’ offense, they left a bunch of runners on nearly every inning. Todd Frazier in particular was a big culprit when he left the bases loaded in the first. The Mets did attempt a rally later on in the seventh with two outs, but Michael Conforto struck out to end the inning.
That was it for both sides and now the Mets’ supply of magic is running out.
Full recap to follow.
