What looked to be a storybook ending to the Mets career of Zack Wheeler ended up being just another Shakespearean Tragedy as the Mets fell to the Marlins, 4-2. After giving himself a lead in the seventh inning, a pair of homers put Zack Wheeler and the Mets back in the hole after a missed third-strike call extended the inning.
Prior to the seventh inning, it was a competitive pitching duel as Jordan Yamamoto and Wheeler went tit for tat as the pair kept the game scoreless for the first seven frames and combined to strike out 18 batters along the way. In the Mets’ half of the seventh, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Zack Wheeler who dunked a single into center field to give himself a 1-0 lead. Brandon Nimmo added a sac fly to put the Mets up by two before the rally met its end.
That lead didn’t last long as Tyler Heineman and old friend Curtis Granderson both homered in the next half inning to give the Marlins a 3-2 advantage over Wheeler and the Amazin’s. While it was sullied by a disappointing eighth inning, Wheeler’s final start of the year was nothing to sneeze at. Going eight full innings, Wheeler allowed three runs on five hits while striking out 10 Marlins and not walking a soul.
Full recap to follow.
