In one of the most improbable season endings you could ever imagine, Dominic Smith launched a walkoff three-run home run to top the Braves 7-6. Smith hadn’t had an at bat since July, after missing two months with a stress reaction in his foot, and only entered the game in the tenth. Even with Brian Snitker playing for keeps and bringing in a lefty, Smith came through anyway, launching Grant Dayton’s second pitch of the night over the right-center field wall for the spectacular finish.
There were definitely other good moments in this game - a good start from Noah Syndergaard, home runs from J.D. Davis and Joe Panik, a standing ovation for Pete Alonso - and also plenty of bad - most notably, Paul Sewald and Walker Lockett showing once again that they’re not major league caliber pitchers. It’s fitting that 2019 end with mixed bag game, complete with a moment that gives fans hope for the future despite all the frustration that led to this point. The Mets finish 86-76, and no one is glad to see them go.
