Short-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (43-32)

HUDSON VALLEY 5, BROOKLYN 4 (BOX)

Brooklyn lost the first game of the New York Penn League semifinals, putting them one game away from elimination. Michel Otanez struggled badly, giving up three runs in the first three innings, but the Cyclones battled back. A single from Jake Mangum in the third got Brooklyn their first run, and another single from Jose Peroza in the fourth cut the deficit to one. Jake Ortega and Peroza then went for a double steal, and while Ortega was tagged out in a run down between first and second, Peroza scampered home with the tying run. The Cyclones then took the lead on Luke Ritter’s fielder’s choice in the fifth, putting them up 4-3.

It wouldn’t last. Otanez, now with a lead to work with, couldn’t record an out in the fifth inning. Instead, he walked his fourth batter of the game, then surrendered a two-run home run to Greg Jones that flipped the score. Brooklyn wouldn’t rally again, and they dropped the first game of the best-of-three series. Game 2 will be in Brooklyn on Thursday night, with the rehabbing Jed Lowrie in the lineup.
