Final Score: Mets 3, Diamondbacks 1-Pete and RePete

Two mighty blasts by the first baseman was the difference in this one.

Jacob deGrom was Jacob deGrom and Pete Alonso was Pete Alonso in the Mets’ 3-1 victory over the Diamondbacks at Citi Field.

Alonso got the Mets on the board early against Arizona starter Merrill Kelly when he hit a solo shot in the first inning. Amed Rosario extended the lead with a RBI single but old friend Wilmer Flores immediately cut into it with a solo home run of his own.

Despite the mistake to Flores, deGrom was in complete control the entire game and looked dominant. He struck out eleven Arizona hitters, walked one, and allowed only three hits. He didn’t need any extra runs but Alonso provided one with his second home run of the night to bring the lead back up to two.

The bullpen has not been kind to the Mets’ ace but it was all Seth Lugo in this one and there would be no epic collapses on this night. Lugo dispatched the Diamondbacks with ease in two innings of work and sealed a much-needed victory.

Full recap to follow.
