Alex Rodriguez is interested in buying the Mets

The former Yankee grew up a Mets fan.

The Mets are still for sale after the Steve Cohen deal fell through, and Alex Rodriguez is reportedly interested in buying. Rodriguez has made no secret of his love of the team and Keith Hernandez growing up, and he was once famously a member of the ballclub in Queens before then-GM Steve Phillips balked at the asking price.

The asking price for the Mets is also very steep. Cohen walked away from a $2.6 billion deal, and now the Wilpons are reportedly seeking more than $3 billion in order for them to close the five-year transfer window that caused Cohen to cancel the deal. It is extremely unlikely Rodriguez has the financial capability to meet that goal, which means an ownership group would need to be put together if he wants to make his dream a reality.

Obviously another layer to a potential Rodriguez sale would be having Derek Jeter as an owner in the same division. Rodriguez and Jeter were teammates on the Yankees from when Rodriguez joined the team in 2004 until Jeter’s retirement in 2014.

This is still just a rumor, and with the Wilpons involved the news could change on the dime they are always looking to save.
