As regular From Complex to Queens listeners know, we’ve decided to start following a CPBL team in the absence of Mets baseball for the foreseeable future. We picked a team and will post updates on how they’re doing over in Taiwan. Why the Uni-President Lions?
- Tainan City, home of the Lions, is one of the oldest and largest cities in Taiwan
- Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium is directly under the flight path of airplanes flying in and out of the nearby Tainan Airport.
- The team has talent and looks good on paper but has been thwarted time and time again in the last few years by poor on-the-field field management and front office executive decisions.
- Employed in their organization at one time or another former player and SNY analyst Nelson Figueroa, Columbia Fireflies pitching coach Jerome Williams, former manager Mickey Callaway, and Generation K member Bill Pulsipher.
Sounds like the Mets to me!

Well, there goes the winning streak. It was nice while it lasted. Logan Darnell gave up five runs in the second and another in the third, and recovering from that deficit was a pretty a tall order against Shih-Peng Chen, one of the better pitchers in the league this season. Sure enough, it didn’t happen.

Rakuten Monkeys 5, Uni-President Lions 3 (BOX)
Chen-Yen Chiang was extremely home run prone, giving up two in the second inning and another in the third for a total of five runs. Outside of those three longballs, he was in and out of danger all evening, walking one and allowing ten hits. Both teams settled down in the second half of the game, but unfortunately for the Lions, they found themselves behind. They struggled, loading up the bases in the ninth, but were unable to catch up.

Uni-President Lions 10, Rakuten Monkeys 5 (BOX)
The Lions used the long ball to good effect, with the top of the lineup combining to slug four- two of which were Chih-Chieh Su’s, increasing his league lead to sixteen. Lions starter Tzu-Chien Shih was a little homer prone himself, allowing a pair, but the supercharged offense bailed him out.

Rakuten Monkeys 6, Uni-President Lions 5 (BOX)
The Uni-Lions and the Rakuten Monkeys had a back-and-forth affair, with the lead changing five times. The most critical runs came in the ninth. In the top of the inning, the Lions tied the game back up at 5-5 when Yung-Chi Chen hit a line drive into right. Chun-Yen Huang came in to pitch the ninth and quickly gave up a run, allowing the Monkeys to walk off.

June 20 (19-26)
Uni-President Lions 13, Fubon Guardians 4 (BOX)
Josh Roenicke spun a strong start, throwing seven scoreless innings, but the bullpen almost blew it. Well, they would’ve almost blown it if the offense hadn’t exploded for 12 runs earlier in the game. The team combined for six home runs, including a pair by An-Ko Lin. Reliever Hao-Chun Chiu replaced Roenicke in the eighth and gave up four runs. The Lions got one of those runs back in the top of the ninth, but given the impressive lead they built up, the win was never in doubt.
