Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez’s bid to own the Mets may well be gaining steam. Reports indicate that the celebrity power couple has added billionaire Mike Repole as a partner in their efforts to raise enough capital to successfully buy the team away from the Wilpons.
In addition to being the co-creator of the company behind the making of Vitaminwater, the 51-year-old Repole is a Queens native who has expressed interest in pursuing ownership of the Mets in the past. Between his local roots and his $1 billion net worth, he would seem an ideal partner for Rodriguez and Lopez, who are still angling to be the ones holding primary control over the team if their bid is successful.
The group remains in competition with other potential buyers—including 76ers and Devils owner Josh Harris—and the extent to which the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic will impact the end result of the sale is still unknown. Nevertheless, the combined star power of Rodriguez and Lopez has made the prospect of them winding up as owners of the Mets the most tantalizing of all other possibilities, and with this move they may be one step closer to that reality.
