We check in on our adopted CPBL team, the Uni-President Lions.

As regular From Complex to Queens listeners know, we’ve decided to start following a CPBL team in the absence of Mets baseball for the foreseeable future. We picked a team and will post updates on how they’re doing over in Taiwan. Why the Uni-President Lions?

  • Tainan City, home of the Lions, is one of the oldest and largest cities in Taiwan
  • Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium is directly under the flight path of airplanes flying in and out of the nearby Tainan Airport.
  • The team has talent and looks good on paper but has been thwarted time and time again in the last few years by poor on-the-field field management and front office executive decisions.
  • Employed in their organization at one time or another former player and SNY analyst Nelson Figueroa, Columbia Fireflies pitching coach Jerome Williams, former manager Mickey Callaway, and Generation K member Bill Pulsipher.

Sounds like the Mets to me!

July 05 (23-31)

CTBC Brothers 11, Uni-President Lions 2 (BOX)

When the hottest team in the league came to town, you kinda figure that things are not going to go well, and sure enough, they didn’t. With their 11-2 schlubbing of the Uni-Lions, the Brothers not only swept the three-game series, but they did so in convincing fashion, outscoring their opponents 27-7. The Lions beat Ariel Miranda earlier in the season, but the southpaw had the final word in this one, tossing six strong innings. Both of Tainan’s runs came in the third on a passed ball and sac fly.

July 07 (24-31)

Uni-President Lions 5, Fubon Guardians 3 (BOX)

Ruei-Yang Gu Lin was solid in his second 2020 start, with the youngster limiting the Fubon Guardians to three runs over five innings. The Guardians scored first, plating a run in the top of the first, but the Uni-Lions took the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a Fubon error and a double into deep right field by Chih-Chieh Su. The Guardians tied things back up at 3-3 in the third, but two singles by Su in the fourth and sixth gave the Lions a lead that they were able to hold on to.

  • CF Chieh-Hsien Chen (#24): 2-5, 2 R, SB (7)

July 08 (25-31)

Uni-President Lions 7, Fubon Guardians 1 (BOX)

The Guardians are the only team behind the Uni-Lions in the standings, and the Lions did what better teams are supposed to do and beat up on the guys below them. The Lions scored in the bottom of the first on a Chih-Chieh Su homer, his league-tying nineteenth of the year, and at no point in the game trailed. Fubon tied it up at 1-1 quickly, but that one run would be the only they’d manage, whereas the Uni-Lions kept the pressure up.

  • CF Chieh-Hsien Chen (#24): 1-5
  • LF Chih-Chieh Su (#32): 1-3, 2 R, HR (19), RBI, BB, K
  • RF An-Ko Lin (#77): 0-4, K
  • 3B Yung-Chi Chen (#13): 2-2, 2 R, BB
  • 1B Chieh-Jui Wu (#62): 0-1

  • PR-DH Liang-Wei Chiang (#27): 0-0, SB (1)
  • 2B-3B Chung-Ting Chen (#66): 3-4, R, RBI
  • 1B Kuo-Ching Kao (#68): 1-3, R, HR (1), 2 RBI, K

July 09 (25-31)

NO GAME (SCHEDULE)

July 10 (26-31)

Uni-President Lions 7, Rakuten Monkeys 3 (BOX)

Tainan took the lead in the top of the first, and while Monkeys tied it a few innings, at no point did the Lions trail. With things tied 3-3, Wu-Hsiung Pan knocked a pinch-hit double that drove in two runners, giving the Uni-Lions the lead once more. One inning later, first baseman Chieh-Jui Wu hit a two-run homer that added to their lead. Logan Darnell, who will be leaving the team soon, tossed an inning plus of relief, and Chun-Jen Cheng and Yun-Wen Chen split duties in the ninth to close the door on Rakuten, with Chen saving his eighth game of the season.

  • RF Wei-Sheng Chang (#52): 1-4, R, K
  • PH-RF Kai-Wen Cheng (#28): 0-1
  • CF Chieh-Hsien Chen (#24): 3-5, R, RBI
  • LF Chih-Chieh Su (#32): 1-5, BB, SB (9)
  • DH An-Ko Lin (#77): 1-3, 2 R, BB, K
  • 1B Chieh-Jui Wu (#62): 3-3, 2 R, HR (2), 4 RBI, BB

  • RHP Yun-Wen Chen (#12): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, S (8)

ROSTER ALERT: LHP Logan Darnell has been granted his release and will leave the team in mid-July.

July 11 (26-33)

Rakuten Monkeys 9, Uni-President Lions 2 (BOX)

Rakuten starter Wei-Chun Weng wasn’t necessarily dominant, but he handled the Lions with ease, tossing a complete game. The only two blemishes on his line was a pair of solo home runs by center fielder Wei-Sheng Chang, his first of the year, and right fielder An-Ko Lin, his league-leading twentieth of the year.

  • CF Wei-Sheng Chang (#52): 2-4, R, HR (1), RBI
  • DH Chieh-Hsien Chen (#24): 0-4
  • LF Chih-Chieh Su (#32): 0-4, K
  • RF An-Ko Lin (#77): 2-4, R, HR (20), RBI
