The Mets defeated the Braves 1-0 in a crisp Opening Day victory this afternoon at Citi Field, as Jacob deGrom threw five brilliant, scoreless innings and Yoenis Cespedes hit a no-doubt solo shot as the team’s designated hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning that turned out to be the difference in the game.
With Mike Soroka having shut the Mets out through six innings and deGrom having been relatively limited in pitch count, the Mets’ bullpen was called upon and performed very well. Seth Lugo threw two scoreless innings before Justin Wilson threw a scoreless eighth, and Edwin Diaz notched the save as he faced some of the Braves’ best hitters with a strong ninth inning.
Full recap to follow.
