The Mets have placed catcher Rene Rivera on the injured list with a hyperextended left elbow, and they have called up right-handed pitcher Franklyn Kilome to take his spot on the team’s 30-man active roster.
Since Opening Day on July 24, the Metes had been carrying three catchers on their active roster, with the other two being Wilson Ramos and Tomas Nido. Rivera has made just four plate appearances a week into the season, going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts and a single.
Kilome was the Mets’ return when they traded Asdrubal Cabrera to the Phillies shortly before the 2018 trade deadline. He missed all of the 2019 season because of Tommy John surgery, but he ranked ninth on our list of the Mets’ top 25 prospects coming into the 2020 season. He most recently pitched in 2018, spending that year with the Phillies’ and Mets’ Double-A affiliates. In total, he threw 140.0 innings and finished the year with a 4.18 ERA, 125 strikeouts, and 61 walks.
