The Mets got absolutely trounced by the Nationals tonight at Citi Field, as Steven Matz gave up eight earned runs in four-and-one-third innings to bring his 2020 ERA up to 8.20. Paul Sewald was somehow even worse, giving up six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning in immediate relief of Matz.
Chasen Shreve gave up two runs in two innings in succession of Sewald before Drew Smith threw a scoreless inning. And Luis Guillorme, who is not a pitcher, threw a scoreless ninth inning, making him one of just two Mets pitchers to not give up multiple runs in a disastrous game. The Mets scored four runs, and it doesn’t really matter when or how they did that.
Full recap to follow.
