The Mets salvaged a series split this afternoon with a 7-2 victory against the Washington Nationals. Most of those runs from the Amazins came via the home run ball, and a whopping six of them came from Tomas Nido, who notched both his first multi-homer game and first grand slam of his career with impressive bombs to left field in the fourth and fifth innings. Dominic Smith whacked a solo homer of his own in the second, his fourth of the season, and the Mets also tacked on an insurance run in the ninth thanks to three straight two-out hits culminating in an RBI single by Pete Alonso.
Notching his third major league win was rookie lefty David Peterson, who had arguably his best start yet today. He tossed 74 pitches over five innings and only allowed one unearned run. Said run came in the first after two walks and a poor throw from Tomas Nido on a dribbler in front of the plate loaded the bases with no outs. Thankfully, the only run Peterson gave up came on a fielder’s choice from a soft groundout to the pitcher by Howie Kendrick The inning could have been a lot worse if not for a stunning leaping catch from Jeff McNeil in left field with two outs, although it came at a potentially high cost, as McNeil had to be carted off the field after crashing into the outfield wall. X-rays performed during the game were thankfully negative, though we still have to wait and see what the results of an MRI reveal. The bullpen followed up Peterson’s performance by only giving up one run (on yet another homer from Juan Soto) over four innings of work.
Full recap to follow.
