Steve Cohen is now in exclusive negotiations to buy the New York Mets and is expected to finalize a deal to buy the team, according to a report from David Faber of CNBC. Ever since the Wilpons’ ownership group announced its intention to sell the team late last year, Cohen has been one of the prominent names involved in the process, having nearly completed a deal over the winter before it fell apart just weeks later.
After that deal fell apart, though, the Wilpons made it clear that they still intended to sell the team and had enlisted help to conduct that sale over the course of the summer. All along, Cohen remained the favorite to buy the team, and even his primary competition—a group headlined by Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez—has reportedly informed the Mets that they’ve bowed out of their attempt to buy the franchise.
It ain’t over ‘til it’s over, but the Wilpons’ days as Mets owners might soon come to an end.
