Final score: Yankees 2, Mets 1 - Threw it away

Third time was not in fact the charm.

MLB: New York Mets at New York Yankees Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

After pulling two dramatic wins out of their hat yesterday, the Mets couldn’t repeat the trick a third time, falling to the Yankees 2-1 in walkoff fashion. The offense was totally stymied, with the lone run coming on a solo home run by Wilson Ramos in the eighth inning.

Robert Gsellman was much better in this start than his previous two, giving up only one run on a first inning home run. He was helped by his defense in the fourth when two runners were thrown out at the plate, but overall this was a big step in the right direction. Steven Matz looked excellent for an inning before leaving with an injury, and the Met bullpen again mostly held up until the ninth, when Dellin Betances allowed the game-winning run to score on a wild pitch.

The loss drops the Mets to 15-17 on the season, 3.5 games back of the division leading Braves. They’ll play a double header at Yankee Stadium tomorrow afternoon with Rick Porcello and Seth Lugo getting the starts.

Full recap to follow.
