Final score: Yankees 5, Mets 2 - Not-so-sweep revenge

The Yankees got their revenge, completing a sweep of today’s doubleheader.

In another game that was simply painful to watch, the Mets fell to the Yankees 5-2 in the second half of their doubleheader. Seth Lugo was good, but Deivi Garcia was better, allowing only one run and striking out six as he dominated the Mets in his major league debut. A couple walks and a pair of singles made some noise in the bottom of the eighth, but Wilson Ramos struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Lugo struck out a whopping seven batters in only 3.2 innings, giving up four hits, a pair of walks, and a single run. Chasen Shreve was excellent for 2.1 innings of relief (why he wasn’t used in game 1 remains a mystery) as was Jeurys Familia in his one inning of work, but Drew Smith struggled with his command and gave up a pinch-hit grand slam to Gary Sanchez in extras.

The loss drops the Mets to 15-19 on the season, and it sure feels like a season ending pair of games. They’ll need to play close to .700 ball the rest of the way in order to sneak into the playoffs, though they will have a chance to get a streak started with Jacob deGrom on the mound against the Marlins tomorrow afternoon.

Full recap to follow.
