The Mets have placed Steven Matz and Dellin Betances on the injured list, called up Franklyn Kilome and Drew Smith to take their places on the team’s active roster, and added fellow pitcher Ariel Jurado to the roster as the team’s 29th man for its doubleheader in The Bronx today.
Matz pitched one inning in relief in yesterday’s loss to the Yankees and did not return to the mound because of his shoulder discomfort. Betances hadn’t been known to be dealing with any injury issues recently, but he had a brutal inning against his former team yesterday in the ninth inning, ultimately throwing a wild pitch that plated the Yankees’ winning run.
Kilome has thrown seven innings over the course of two appearances at the major league level thus far this year, and he has a 5.14 ERA and 5.00 FIP. Smith has thrown six innings and has a 3.00 ERA and 3.31 FIP with six strikeouts and zero walks. He’s been bouncing back and forth between the Mets’ active roster and alternate training site over the past few weeks.
As for Jurado, the Mets traded for him in early August. He came up through the Rangers’ organization and has thrown 177.0 innings for them at the major league level in 44 apearances, 26 of which were starts. In total, the 24-year-old has a 5.85 ERA and 5.07 FIP with 5.24 strikeouts and 2.75 walks per nine as a major league pitcher.
