Final Score: Marlins 5, Mets 3—Fourth time’s not the charm

With Jacob deGrom on the mound, the team lost its fourth straight game.

MLB: Miami Marlins at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets returned to Citi Field for one day in the hopes of steering their season back on course after three brutal losses against the Yankees. With Jacob deGrom on the mound in a day game against a frustrated Marlins team that had to travel up for one game before returning home, New York had to feel good about its chances.

Instead, one bad inning derailed Sunshine Superman as the Mets fell 5-3 to fall to five games under .500 as their ship continues to sink. The Mets built a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to a Jeff McNeil double and a Dominic Smith sacrifice fly. For a while it looked like that would be enough, deGrom was great for five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters in that span.

However, it all fell apart in the sixth inning. The ace served up a second-deck home run to Garrett Cooper to lead off the frame. A Pete Alonso error followed, which set the table for Miami to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Robinson Cano drew New York to within a run with a solo shot to lead off the sixth, but Brian Anderson launched a monstrous home run off Brad Brach in the eighth inning to give the Marlins some breathing room. The team failed to score over the final two innings as they lost their fourth straight.

It’s worth noting that, with today being the trade deadline, the Mets acquired Robinson Chirinos and Todd Frazier from the Rangers and Miguel Castro from the Orioles. More on that later.

Full recap to follow.
