The Mets have placed right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha on the injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder. The team has called up catcher Ali Sanchez to take his spot on the 28-man active roster for now.

Through three starts with the Mets this year, the 29-year-old Wacha has a 6.43 ERA and 4.47 FIP. While his first start went well, Wacha struggled in his second and third starts, giving up a total of nine earned runs in nine innings of work. Signed by the Mets over the offseason, Wacha clearly had potential health and performance issues coming off his 2019 season with the Cardinals.

Right now, the Mets have just four starting pitchers on their active roster: Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, Rick Porcello, and David Peterson. With Marcus Stroman still on the injured list after suffering a torn calf and needing at least one more simulated game before returning to the Mets’ active roster, the Mets do not yet know who will pitch in Wacha’s spot in the rotation.
