Final Score: Mets 4, Marlins 2—Andres the Giant

Jacob deGrom had a rocky second inning, but powered through, and Andres Gimenez collected three hits.

Mets fans are very spoiled by Jacob deGrom always looking free and easy. This game was anything but for deGrom, but as aces do, he battled and kept the Mets in the game as they pulled out a 5-3 victory over the Marlins, granting him his second win of the year. His inability to find the strike zone in the second inning due to what seemed like a blister on his finger limited his outing to just five innings, but he settled in after getting out of a bases loaded jam in that rocky second frame. The Mets put up a two spot in the third against Pablo Lopez, thanks to a rally started by an Andres Gimenez single and stolen base and added another run in the fourth thanks to a Gimenez double and a Brandon Nimmo RBI single. Gimenez was the spark plug for the Mets today, scoring three of the Mets’ four runs in total and going 3-for-4, including a leadoff drag bunt single that helped give the Mets an insurance run in the seventh.

The Marlins cut the Mets’ lead to 3-2 on a Jesus Aguilar home run off of deGrom in the fifth, but the bullpen held firm, as Jared Hughes, Dellin Betances, Edwin Diaz, and Seth Lugo each logged a scoreless inning to hold the Marlins to two runs and secure the series victory for the Mets.
