The Mets lost on the back of a horrific inning by the bullpen, costing them the game and the series, and putting the playoffs very much in doubt with just 13 games to go.
The Mets started this one strong, with singles from Jeff McNeil, Todd Frazier and Dominic Smith putting them up 1-0 in the first against Hyun Jin Ryu. They could have had a bigger inning, but a base running blunder by Frazier cut the inning off before they were able to scratch over any other runs. The Blue Jays answered back in the bottom of the second by way of a two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr., putting the Toronto/Buffalo Blue Jays up 2-1. David Peterson pitched rather well outside of that, going 5 innings and giving up just those two runs.
The score would stay that way until the 6th inning, where the game got out of hand and out of hand quickly.
Brad Brach replaced Peterson in that 6th inning, and he imploded on the mound. He walked three straight batters, loading the bases with no outs. Jared Hughes came in to relieve Brach, and promptly walked a run in, making it 3-1 Jays. A Santiago Espinal doubled cleared the bases, and cleared the Mets out of the series.
A single by Frazier and a fielders choice by Smith made it a 7-3 game in the 8th, but it was too little, too late for New York.
Full recap to follow.
