Final Score: Braves 7, Mets 0—Futility (and Fire) in Flushing

Rick Porcello pitched his best game with the season hanging in the balance, but the Mets didn’t give him any run support.

The Mets were shut out by the Braves 7-0 in a game they absolutely needed to win. Rick Porcello did his part, striking out ten Braves hitters over seven innings—a season high. The only run against him came on a Ronald Acuna Jr. solo homer that just sneaked over the wall into the front row seats in right field.

But the normally mighty Mets offense could not break through against Kyle Wright, who pitched his best game as a major leaguer. He matched Porcello, tossing 6 13 brilliant innings and giving up just one hit—a Wilson Ramos double in the third—and striking out six. His day ended with a one-out walk to J.D. Davis, manager Brian Snitker wary of his pitch count as he navigated the longest outing of his career. Lefty reliever Will Smith entered the game to face Dominic Smith and induced an inning-ending double play to quiet the tepid threat.

The Braves added two in the eighth inning against Jeurys Familia, who walked two batters and then gave up a hit to none other than Travis d’Arnaud. They then broke it open against Chasen Shreve and Corey Oswalt with four runs in the ninth inning. The Mets went down quietly against the Braves bullpen in the final two frames in what is probably the nail in the coffin of the season.

Full recap to follow.
