Final Score: Mets 3, Nationals 2 —Hanging on for dear life

The Mets beat the Nats to stay alive in the race.

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets avoided elimination tonight by trumping the Nationals by a score of 3-1. The star of the show was David Peterson, who got the nod for the Mets and looked about as good as he has since his call-up, tossing seven innings of one-run ball while striking out four. Being that this was Peterson’s last start of the season, he ends his year with an ERA of 3.44.

Robinson Chirinos, of all people, provided the biggest blow with a two-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Mets up 2-1. He later tacked on another RBI with an infield single in the top of the fifth. Dom Smith also had a good showing, going 3-for-5 tonight to add on to his impressive season line. Edwin Diaz came in for the ninth and allowed a run to make it dicey, but stranded the tying run at first to notch yet another save.

The Mets live to see another day in the postseason race, and how the race looks tomorrow will depend upon what happens in the Marlins game this evening.

Full recap to follow.
