On Thursday, the Mets made waves by pulling off a blockbuster trade for All Star shortstop Francisco Lindor and starter Carlos Carrasco. In return, the Mets send Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario to Cleveland, along with prospects Josh Wolf and Isaiah Greene. The team has already been active this winter, inking catcher James McCann to a four-year deal and signing reliever Trevor May to a two-year contract.
Under new owner Steve Cohen, the Mets have shown that they are willing to spend more than fans and people around the league are used to seeing them spend. The move, as expected, generated a ton of reactions.
- Marcus Stroman could hardly contain his excitement over the news on Twitter, saying he is “turnt right now” as the news was breaking and calling Cohen a legend. He also called Lindor and Carrasco “two of the most humble, down-to-earth human beings on the planet!”
- Stroman also expressed appreciation at some positive news following the recent events.
- Stroman was hardly the only current Met to take notice on social media. In a simple post, new addition McCann called the move “big time”.
- Cohen had some fun with the news, asking people to direct their attention back to what matters: the black jerseys.
- Amed Rosario said goodbye to the only organization that he had ever called home.
- Old friend Kevin Burkhardt said that Lindor and ‘that smile’ will be perfect in New York.
- Mike Piazza is excited for Mets fans following the trade, and likened the offseason energy to that of 1998 and 1999.
- Another former Mets catcher, Paul Lo Duca, views the team potentially extending Lindor as the bigger statement move.
- Matt Kelly of MLB.com wrote about what Lindor brings to the Mets.
- Mike Axisa of CBS Sports picked the winners and losers of the trade, and called it a ‘heist’ for the Mets, which spells bad news for the NL East and Cleveland.
- Meanwhile, his colleague R.J. Anderson says the Mets fleeced Cleveland.
- ESPN’s MLB insiders also graded the trade and examined what’s next for both clubs.
- Sports Illustrated’s Matt Martell gave the Mets high marks, while Cleveland’s grade wasn’t as positive.
- Ryan Fagan of Sporting News had a similar evaluation of the trade for both sides.
- Similarly, a ‘rival executive’ called the blockbuster a ‘total steal’ and bluntly stated that people in Cleveland ‘should be fired for doing that trade’.
- Bob Nightengale sees the Mets as World Series contenders with Lindor and Carrasco on board.
- The betters agree, as the club’s World Series odds improved following the news.
- Ken Rosenthal wrote about how the move signals a return to the Mets being the ‘big-market bully’.
- During the press conference, Sandy Alderson said that he is ‘always hungry’ following the trade.
- The Mets’ big splash also turns up the heat on the rival Phillies.
