Mets 8, Phillies 4 - One down, 90-ish to go

The first win of the year!

MLB: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

After getting off to a rough start in game one, the Mets bounced back for the first win of the season, topping the Phillies 8-4. Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso both hit two-run home runs, with the Mets scoring their other four runs in the seventh on four walks, a steal of home, and a double. Marcus Stroman tossed six strong innings, allowing only one run to earn the win.

It wasn’t all good news for the Mets, unfortunately. J.D. Davis left in the second after being hit by a pitch in the left hand, though x-rays did come back negative. More importantly, the Mets’ bullpen continued to struggle, with all three of Miguel Castro, Trevor May, and Jeurys Familia landing in hot water in the final three innings. The poor depth of the group has been exacerbated by questionable decisions from Luis Rojas as well, a storyline that merits watching as the season goes on.

The Mets will play one more in Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon with David Peterson squaring off against Aaron Nola before returning to New York for their home opener on Friday.

Full recap to follow.
