We are as shocked as you are.

MLB: New York Mets at Miami Marlins Rhona Wise-USA TODAY Sports

Following nine innings in which the Mets struggled to put up much of an offensive threat, a walk-off homer off the bat of Garrett Cooper gave the Mets a 3-1 loss to tie the series against the Marlins.

Joey Lucchesi started for the Mets and looked about as impressive as we’ve seen him pitch this season. The churve-throwing lefty tossed four scoreless, allowing just one baserunner—who immediately was erased via a double play—and notching a whopping eight strikeouts. Sean Reid-Foley replaced him in the fifth and managed to keep the Marlins off the board until the seventh, when two runners got on and Luis Rojas went to Aaron Loup to face Corey Dickerson with runners on second and third with one out. Dickerson hit a ball to left field, and Cameron Maybin made a solid throw to the plate. Alas, Tomas Nido dropped the ball while applying the tag, and the Marlins had the first lead of the day.

Pablo Lopez, meanwhile, made easy work of the Mets offense, tossing seven scoreless innings with just four hits and one walk while racking up eight strikeouts. But the Mets were able to get on the board with an RBI single by Dominic Smith in the eighth inning (thanks in part to a very generous ball call on what should have been strike three). Alas, that was all they were able to score, and while Miguel Castro kept the Marlins offense at bay in the eighth, Drew Smith was not able to accomplish the same feat in the ninth. Despite getting to within a strike of ending the inning—thanks in part to a terrific play by Johneshwy Fargas in center—he served up a meatball to Garrett Cooper, who promptly gave the Marlins a win and prevented us from experiencing our second extra inning affair in two days.

Full recap to follow.
