Final score: Mets 13, Braves 2—Even Cameron Maybin got a hit!

The Mets had their best offensive performance of the season and won their fourth straight game.

Despite the less than stellar names who continue to get at-bats for the Mets, the team somehow found a way to have their biggest offensive outburst of the 2021 season, hitting five home runs en route to an 13-2 win.

Coming into the night, the big story was Taijuan Walker’s return from the injured list. The righty starting pitcher picked up right where he left off by showing impressive stuff and keeping the opposing team off the board. He pitched five sterling innings of work, allowing just two hits and one walk without any runs and racking up eight strikeouts. He threw eighty pitches through five, and Luis Rojas decided not to push him any further in his first outing back. The bullpen replaced him and gave up a couple of runs—the first coming off a wild pitch from Miguel Castro in the sixth and the second off an Ozzie Albies RBI single off Sean Reid-Foley in the eighth—but they were otherwise able to limit the damage.

Still, the story of today’s game was unquestionably the offense. The bats scored early and often against the Atlanta pitching staff. Starting pitcher Ian Anderson gave up four runs in four innings of work—including on homers from James McCann and Jonathan Villar and an RBI single from Dominic Smith. The team then blew the game wide open with a seven-run sixth inning, with another two homers coming off the bats of two of the prominent ReplaceMets: Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney. The Mets had more than enough runs to secure the victory by this point, but the struggling Francisco Lindor decided to put the icing on the cake an inning later by hitting a two-run homer. With any luck, tonight’s game will represent a sign of things to come for both him and the Mets offense as a whole.

Full recap to follow.
