The Mets and Phillies followed the same blueprint in game two that they laid out in game one, for the most part. The Phillies took the lead, though this time they waited until the sixth inning, when Bryce Harper took a 94 MPH fastball by David Peterson (who was excellent outside of that), and rudely deposited it into the bullpen.
The Mets, as they did in game one, battled back in the seventh to tie it. They worked the bases loaded by way of singles, errors, and walks, and a pinch hit sacrifice fly by James McCann tied it at one apiece. This time, however, the Phillies took the lead in the top of the seventh, advancing the free runner to third and home by way of two ground outs — though the Mets had chances to get the lead runner out if either Francisco Lindor or Luis Guillorme fielded the ball cleanly.
The Mets ran out of magic, though, as three meek at bats by Lindor, Pete Alonso, and game one’s hero Dom Smith against Hector Neris saw the Mets go down in order, dropping the game 2-1 in extras.
