Final score: Mets 4, Phillies 3—Grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat

The Phillies bullpen blows yet another late lead as the Mets take yet another game from their division rival.

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets faced off against the Phillies today after splitting the double header yesterday, looking to secure at least a series split. There was reason to be hopeful, as they were doing it with deGrom on the mound, who was also looking to continue his historic season. At first it looked a little shaky, as deGrom allowed 2 earned runs during his six innings, ballooning his ERA to 0.69. The Mets only scored one run over the first 6.1 innings tonight, putting deGrom at risk of taking a loss.

But as is the case with a lot of Phillies games this season, once they began going to their bullpen, it was curtains for Philadelphia. Kevin Pillar hit a pinch hit home run off Ranger Suárez, tying the game. Then, after the Phillies scored one run off Edwin Díaz, the Mets came into the bottom of the ninth needing to make something happen. But the Phillies decided to bring in Héctor Neris, who was recently demoted from the closer position, to close the game. And with Neris’ inability to find the strike zone and the Phillies defense’s incompetence, the Mets found themselves with the bases loaded and no outs. A Guillorme walk tied the game, and with a Michael Conforto walk-off sacrifice fly, the Mets won the game and at least split the series. They face the Phillies again tomorrow, looking for the win with Marcus Stroman probably taking the mound after only pitching one inning in his last start.

Full recap to follow.
