It’s hard to believe the Mets were actually leading at one point in tonight’s game. When Pete Alonso hit a rocket of a two-run homer that clocked in at 111.2 mph in the first, you would forgive any Mets fan for feeling good about the club’s chances against the last-place Baltimore Orioles. But it was all downhill from there, as the Mets were crushed 10-3 at Camden Yards in the first game of their two-game series.
The Mets only managed four hits and three runs, bookmarking the game with homers from Alonso in the first to make it 2-0, and in the ninth to make it 10-3. In between those two moments, the bats stayed quiet while Baltimore’s bats woke up. David Peterson improved upon his prior start, lasting into the third this time around, but the results were not much better otherwise. He gave up three runs in the second and another in the third before being lifted for Robert Gsellman, and he could have been charged with two more if not for a solid defensive play by Kevin Pillar in center.
From there, Gsellman gave up four runs of his own, with Maikel Franco providing the exclamation mark with a three-run bomb in the fifth. Jacob Barnes and Drew Smith each gave up a run in relief in the loss, as Baltimore put up runs in six of eight innings while collecting 16 hits.
Full recap to follow.
