Final Score: Mets 14, Orioles 1—Bane of His Existence

The Mets got the best of Matt Harvey for the second time this season en route to a lopsided victory.

The Mets slugged their way to a 14-1 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore, returning the favor for the drubbing they took at the hands of the Orioles yesterday. Pete Alonso got the Mets on the board right away with a two-run homer in the first inning off Matt Harvey, who did not have a good outing, despite assistance from a highlight reel catch from Cedric Mullins to lead off the game.

The Orioles’ best chance to come back came in the bottom of the first, when they plated a run on two singles to pull within a run. But Taijuan Walker limited the damage and was spotless for the rest of his outing, going seven innings and giving up just the one run on five hits. He struck out nine Orioles and walked only one, lowering his season ERA to 2.07 and earning his fifth win of the year.

Meanwhile, the Mets dropped a five spot on Matt Harvey in the third inning, punctuated by a three-run homer by Kevin Pillar, forcing Harvey’s early exit. The Mets added to their already substantial lead with a barrage of home runs off the Orioles bullpen: a solo homer from Billy McKinney in the fifth, back-to-back solo shots from Pillar (again) and Mason Williams (!!!) in the the eighth, and yet another long ball from McKinney—this one a three-run bomb—in the ninth. Jeurys Familia and Seth Lugo each logged scoreless innings in relief of Walker, as the Mets cruised their way to an easy victory in Baltimore, earning a series split with the Orioles.
