Freddie Freeman’s single in the ninth sunk the Mets.

MLB: New York Mets at Atlanta Braves Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets dropped their Thursday night game against the Atlanta Braves, falling 4-3 on a walk-off infield single off the bat of Freddie Freeman. With the defeat, the Mets lost the series at Truist Park after winning the series opener on Tuesday.

For the second straight night, the Mets jumped out in front in this game, this time against Braves hurler Ian Anderson. Francisco Lindor worked a one-out walk and stole second to get a runner in scoring position. Michael Conforto promptly brought him home with a single to right-center as the Mets jumped out ahead.

Jacob deGrom, who entered the game having retired 37 consecutive batters in the first inning, found himself in trouble right away thanks to a leadoff triple from Ehire Adrianza. Two batters later, Atlanta snagged the lead with an Ozzie Albies single, and Austin Riley homered to the opposite field to make it 3-1. Jake got in trouble again, allowing the first two runners to reach base in the second, but he immediately found himself after that and retired the final 18 batters he faced while striking out 14.

In the second half of this game, Dominic Smith came up huge for New York, as he hit solo home runs in the seventh and in the ninth to even up the score. Seth Lugo was called upon in the ninth, and ended up loading the bases with two outs before Freeman lined a single off Lugo’s foot for the game-winning hit.
