2021 Mets Draft profile: Christian Scott

Born in Parkland, Florida, Christian Scott attended Calvary Christian High School, where he won numerous awards, was named to numerous honorary teams, and helped lead the Eagles to the 2018 4A State Title. Of the course of his four years there, he posted a cumulative 1.64 ERA in 183.0 total innings, allowing 153 hits, walking 55, and striking out 223. After graduating in 2018, he went undrafted in the 2018 MLB Draft and went on to attend the University of Florida.

In his freshman year there, the right-hander made a team high 22 appearances, starting 4 games and pitching out of the bullpen in 18. All in all, he posted a 5.19 ERA in 52.0 innings, allowing 54 hits, walking 18, and striking out 44, but was much more effective as a reliever, posting a 2.75 ERA in 36.0 innings out of the pen. He exclusively pitched out of the bullpen in 2020 and had much better results, posting a 1.20 ERA in 15.0 innings, but unfortunately COVID-19 ended his breakout campaign early. Eligible to be drafted in the 2020 MLB Draft because of his age, he was not selected in the extremely abbreviated draft and returned to Florida for his junior season. Scott appeared in 26 games in 2021, making one start. In those team-leading 26 appearances, he posted a 3.00 ERA in 54.0 innings, allowing 46 hits, walking 9, and striking out 51.

Scott has the ideal frame for pitching, standing 6’4” and weighing 215-pounds. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, with some effort. His arm action has some length to it, but he keeps it loose and whippy. He is athletic and repeats his delivery well, landing with a very pronounced and emphatic front foot landing strike.

The right-hander’s fastball sits in the low-to-mid-90s, regularly topping out at 95 MPH and occasionally touching higher. The pitch has some arm-side life to it and sink when thrown down in the zone thanks to the down plane he throws it with. His command of the pitch has come along, and he has improved working north and south.

Scott is mainly a fastball-slider pitcher, with the breaking ball missing a fair amount of bats. Sitting in the mid-80s, the pitch has sweepy break with vertical and horizontal break. It flashes average when thrown down in the zone or below it, though loses some of its bite when its thrown higher. In addition to the slider, he also throws a curveball and a changeup, remnants from when he started, but rarely employs either in-game. Rather, he throws his fastball-slider combination almost exclusively, using either pitch roughly 50% of the time.
