Final Score: Pirates 9, Mets 7 — Shanghaied

If you pretend that all baseball games end after 7 innings, the Mets didn’t do too bad!

MLB: New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Through the first seven innings of this game, the Mets were actually winning 6-0 over the last place Pirates. Unfortunately, not every day can be Manfredball Day so the Mets actually lost 9-7, which is much less cool.

Before I get to the pitching, can I at least touch on the offense? Please? J.D. Davis started his first game in over two and a half months and drove in four runs on two two-run home runs! Travis Blankenhorn, Jeff McNeil, and Brandon Nimmo all drove in a run each on a double, a single, and a home run, respectively.

Okay, now the pitching...but first: Tylor Megill had the best start of his young career, going six scoreless innings and setting himself up for what should’ve been a nice win. Trevor May pitched a scoreless seventh and then [checks notes] Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz combined to give up nine runs before they could get six outs...oops.
