Final score: Braves 2, Mets 0—Muller outpitches Stroman, Mets lose first game of doubleheader

The Mets were helpless against the rookie lefty, as one might expect.

MLB: Game One-Atlanta Braves at New York Mets Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

After one of his best games of the season in his last start, Marcus Stroman got touched up a few times against today, whereas rookie pitcher Kyle Muller silenced the Mets’ bats, resulting in a 2-0 loss to open the series against Atlanta.

Stroman got off to a solid start today, pitching two quick shutout innings to get his day started, but he started getting into some trouble in the third. Thanks in part to a misplay on the part of Dominic Smith in left field, Guillermo Heredia made it to second base to lead off the inning, and Muller pulled off a butcher boy to single through the hole in the infield. Joc Pederson then hit a double to right field to score the first run of the day. Stroman managed to get out of the inning without any additional damage thanks in part to a double play, but he then got hit again in the fourth by giving up a double (that just barely missed being out of the ballpark) and a single to Dansby Swanson and Stephen Vogt, respectively, to lead off the inning. A fielder’s choice on the next play brought in the second run of the day for the Braves.

That would prove to be the only runs the Braves would need, as the Mets were unable to put up any runs against Kyle Muller in his second start against them. The best the Amazins could do was threaten a couple times, such as in third inning when they got runners on first and second with just one out. Alas, Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto struck out to end the frame. They had another tantalizing chance to score some runs against Muller in the fifth when they once again had runners on first and second with one out and once again had the red-hot Alonso up at the plate. Once again, however, he failed to come through, as he hit into a double play to end the scoring chance, and the team subsequently went down quietly against the Braves bullpen in the final two innings.

Full recap to follow.
