-illar of the Day, Games 94-100

The -illars didn’t have the best week, but we’ve got some awards to hand out.

During the 2020/2021 offseason, the Mets made an unprecedented move: they signed two players whose last name ends with -illar, Jonathan Villar and Kevin Pillar. While the names are pronounced differently (Vi-yar versus Pill-ar), the two bench pieces starters sometimes starters for the Mets have contributed a fair amount to their early success already.

Inspired by our own Maggie Wiggin on Twitter, we will declare an “-illar of the Day,” celebrating which player had a more productive (or less destructive) day for the Mets.

The Mets are getting healthy, which is a good thing, but it also means less playing time for the -illar Brothers, specifically Kevin Pillar. But let’s check in and see how the week went for our favorite near homonyms.

Pete Alonso did all the heavy lifting for the Mets in their 3-0 win over the Blue Jays, and so it was time to get historical for today’s -illar.

-illar of the Day: A New York Native, and one of only 5 US Presidents to not be elected into office, Millard Fillmore.

The less said about this mess of a game the better, but neither -illar did squat, so it’s onto an alternate.

-illar of the Day: Sportscaster, aunt to Dakota and Elle Fanning, and the only person in history* to abbreviate Tiffany into Jill, Jill Arrington.

*I can’t back this up.

In Rich Hill’s first game as a Met, Jonathan Villar got the scoring started with a second inning RBI, so let’s give some love to Jonathan Virtual Reality.

In the second game the doubleheader, Kevin Pillar made a nice defensive play, but really got the nod because he had a less bad day at the plate.

In one of the ugliest gams in recent memory, neither did squat. In fact, this game is so bad, it may make you want to take a vacation. Perhaps you’d like a trip to...

-illar of the Day: Illar, Spain! Part of the Andalusian region, Illar boasts a beautiful town square, highlighted by the gorgeous hotel Casa Consistorial!

OK, in the interest of full disclosure, our Linda Surovich suggested Illar, Spain for this game’s recap. But this has been my secret ambition since this column started. Could Game 100 be an -illar-less affair so that I could put Willard Scott, he of the Today Show’s 100th birthday celebrations, always sponsored by Smuckers, as the -illar of the Day? The baseball gods shined down on me, as the Met’s epic victory over the Braves had almost no major -illar actions.

-illar of the Day: It had to be Willard Scott, who is 13 years away from having his 100th birthday announced on television.

The Tally So Far:

Jonathan Villar: 32 wins, 5 ties

Kevin Pillar: 22 wins, 5 ties

Other -illars: 17

We are now in danger of a few bad weeks leading to Other -illars surpassing Kevin. We can’t let that happen. I demand more dingers and defensive gems from Kevoin to keep this competition interesting!
