Hallelujah, it’s raining runs!

MLB: Game One-Washington Nationals at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

Over twenty-four hours after the game began, the Mets’ series opener against the Nationals concluded with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory to snap a four-game losing streak.

Carlos Carrasco started the game for the Mets all the way back on August 10th, and he got off to a very rough start by letting the first two runners on before giving up a three-run homer to Juan Soto. His night was cut short following the suspension of the game due to rain, and Rich Hill picked up after him in the second inning. Hill also had his share of struggles, giving up three runs (along with allowing an inherited runner from Carrasco score) in three innings. Thankfully for the Mets, the bullpen subsequently came on and did an impressive job, with Jeurys Familia, Miguel Castro, Drew Smith, Trevor May, and Edwin Diaz each tossing a scoreless inning.

Most encouragingly, however, the Mets offense looked much more potent than they’ve looked in recent times. Despite suffering an early deficit, they clawed back from a three-run deficit to tie the game thanks to a run in the first on a Dominic Smith RBI double and then three runs in the third inning. They added additional runs in the fifth (on an RBI single from Michael Conforto) and the seventh (on an RBI double from Pete Alonso), and then made a final comeback by scoring two runs in the eighth (the first thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher on a sac bunt attempt by Jonathan Villar, and the second on a pinch-hit single by Brandon Drury). Thanks to the offensive outburst, the Mets finally put a win in the books, and will now try for a second one in the second game of the day.

Full recap to follow.
