The Mets swept the Nationals in a bizarre, rain-delayed series in Queens, taking the finale 5-4 this afternoon. The Mets called upon Trevor Williams, the other player they acquired from the Cubs for Pete Crow-Armstrong to make the start, and Williams was effective in a short outing, limiting the damage to just one-earned run over four and a third innings.
The Mets’ early offense came in the fourth inning, when Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis, and Jonathan Villar combined for three hits, with Conforto and Davis scoring. Villar added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. It’s a good thing he did, as Trevor May and Jeurys Familia coughed up the lead in the bottom of the seventh, aided by some truly horrid defense.
Thankfully, Pete Alonso hit a high fly ball out of the ballpark in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.
Full recap to follow.
