The Mets announced earlier today that they have claimed Heath Hembree off waivers from the Reds. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team transferred Jacob deGrom to the 60-day injured list.

Hembree has pitched in parts of nine seasons with the Giants, Red Sox, Phillies and the Reds. The right-hander owns a career 4.23 ERA, 4.52 FIP, and 1.36 WHIP in 317.0 innings. This year, he has pitched to a 6.38 ERA, a 4.52 FIP, and a 1.21 WHIP in 42.1 innings for Cincinnati. He had eight saves in 45 appearances for the Reds, and a -0.5 bWAR on the season.

As a result, the Mets have also put deGrom on the 60-day IL. This does not change his timetable, according to the team, as he is now eligible to return no sooner than September 13. It was highly unlikely he would have been back in action before that date, anyway, The right-hander is shut down from throwing until at least August 27, at which point the team will re-evaluate and make a decision on his future. Recent reports seemed to indicate that the team is leaning towards shutting deGrom down for the remainder of the 2021 season.
