Mets again fall behind 4-0 to the Marlins and see their rally fall short.

The Mets once again suffered an annoying defeat against the Marlins that felt eerily similar to their Monday night defeat. Like they did in the series opener last night, They fell behind 4-0, battled back, but couldn’t score enough to eke out a win as they ultimately lost.

Taijuan Walker had his fourth straight rough start since the break, allowing four runs over 5.2 innings. He allowed homers to Alex Jackson in the second and Isan Díaz in the third, and allowed two more runs in that third inning on a Bryan De La Cruz two-run single with the bases loaded. Walker did recover from his early troubles to retire nine of the last ten batters he faced, which was at least an encouraging note to end on.

The Mets battled back with a run in the fourth on a Dominic Smith sacrifice fly, and two more in the sixth on another Smith sac fly and a J.D. Davis run-scoring double. The offense would do little else from there, as the Marlins added an insurance run in the eighth against Seth Lugo. The Mets got back to within one run in the ninth, as James McCann doubled to drive home Davis, but Brandon Drury grounded out to end the game. With the Phillies defeating the Nationals 5-4, New York’s division lead shrunk to 1.5 games.

Full recap to follow.
