Playing on the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, the Mets fell to the scuffling Yankees.

Following a pre-game ceremony to honor the 9/11 anniversary, the two New York teams battled and traded leads back and forth, with the Yankees ultimately coming out on top 8-7 to tie up the Subway Series.

Taijuan Walker, who hadn’t won a single game in the second half, started for the Mets, and it seemed like he was on his way to yet another loss after an incredibly rough second inning in which he gave up a whopping three homers and five runs. To his credit, however, he quickly rebounded and went on one of his more impressive pitching runs of the season, retiring thirteen straight batters to end his night. Meanwhile, the Mets mounted an impressive comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second (including via an RBI triple by James McCann and an RBI single by Walker) and then hitting homers in the third (a solo shot by Javier Báez) and sixth (a two-run shot by McCann) to take the lead. Add in an insurance run on an RBI single by Pillar in the seventh, and it seemed like the Mets were on the verge of winning their second straight game of this Subway Series.

Alas, the Yankees mounted a comeback against Trevor May in the eighth, as Aaron Judge hit an impressive two-run shot to left-center field to tie up the game. May ended up not retiring a single batter in the frame, and he was replaced by Aaron Loup. But the Yankees also did some damage against him, with the final blow coming on a groundout that could have been an inning-ending double play if not for an errant throw to first from Báez. That mishap allowed the runner from second to score, giving the Bombers a lead that they would not relinquish.

Full recap to follow.
