Final Score: Cardinals 7, Mets 0—Dud

The Mets got shutout after a big offensive weekend.

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets hardly got anything going offensively tonight against the Cardinals, getting shut out for the 12th time this year, and the 8th time at home, in the first game of a huge 3-game set.

The Mets had no answer at all for Adam Wainwright, and true to form this season, missed a bunch of chances with runners in scoring position. The Mets went 0-for-7 with RISP and left 9 runners on base. They had the bases loaded in the first, runners on first and second in the 5th, and runners on first and third with nobody out in the 8th and came away with 0 runs in all of those chances.

Wainwright, meanwhile, continued to torment the Mets by pitching another gem, notching his 16th win of the year and lowering his season ERA to 2.88, which is remarkable for a 40-year-old pitcher.

Rich Hill got the start on the mound and delivered his customary 5 inning pitched, 3 earned runs effort. The bullpen had held the Cardinals to just those three runs until Yennsy Diaz exploded in the 9th inning, getting charged with 4 runs on five hits to put the game out of reach.

This was a flat-out dud performance by the Mets in a critical series against the team directly above them in the wild card standings. They fall to 3.5 out of the wild card race and 5.5 out of the division race as they only make things harder for themselves down the stretch.

Full recap to follow.
