The Mets’ losing streak continued with a frustrating 4-3 loss in the series opener against the Phillies. They faced off against old friend Zack Wheeler who was once again sharp against his former team. He did get into some trouble when the Mets loaded the bases in the fourth, but only Javier Báez was able to come through with a bloop single that led to the only run against Wheeler.
That inning was still productive since it forced Wheeler’s pitch count up and the Phillies had to turn to their erratic bullpen in the sixth. It took until the eighth but the Mets finally plated a couple of runs against Archie Bradley. Doubles by Michael Conforto and Kevin Pillar drew the Mets to within a run.
As for the Mets’ pitching, Taijuan Walker only went five innings and gave up two runs. After he departed, once again it was only Aaron Loup who had a strong outing. Seth Lugo, Brad Hand, and Jeurys Familia couldn’t get the job done and allowed the Phillies to extend their lead.
Those runs proved crucial since those were the difference in the game. The Mets went down in order with their last chance in the ninth though Brandon Nimmo did give one a ride that was caught in center.
