Final Score: Mets 3, Phillies 2 - A win, but still no cigar

The Mets won, but their position in the standings remains bleak.

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

After dropping the first two games against the Phillies and each of their last five, the Mets bounced back with a 3-2 win on Sunday Night Baseball. Dom Smith and Jeff McNeil were the offensive heroes (as much as one can call anyone on this team a hero), with the former driving in two with a pinch hit double and the latter putting the Mets up with a long solo home run. Rich Hill allowed only two earned runs and struck out seven, but did not factor into the decision after lasting only 4.2 innings.

While it’s certainly better on the surface to win, the effect on the Mets’ playoff odds is close to zero. They remain more than five games back of both the Wild Card and the division with multiple teams in front of them in each race. More importantly, the win hurts their draft position, which could have ramifications for there free agent strategy next offseason. Truly an unfortunate spot to be in at this point of the season.

The Mets will be off tomorrow before playing two with the Brewers, then three with the Brewers next week.

Full recap to follow.
