Following a collision at the plate last night between Andrew Stevenson and Chance Sisco, the Mets activated James McCann from the injured list. McCann is expected to start the second game of the doubleheader in Washington, scheduled for 6:10.
McCann has been on the injured list since August 17th with back spasms, and he returns at a time when the Mets desperately need a healthy catcher. With both he and Tomás Nido landing on the injured list on back-to-back days, the Mets have been relying on Sisco and Patrick Mazeika to fill the catcher role. When Sisco took a shot from Stevenson last night, however, it left the Mets with Mazeika as the only healthy catcher on the roster.
Luis Rojas said that Sisco is doing better than the team expected, and also that the team is considering carrying three catchers on the roster beyond today’s doubleheader to be safe. Mazeika will start game 1 after finishing off the last two innings of last night’s win against the Nationals.
